Top 10 Production Alfa Giuliettas

There is something irresistible about a top ten list.  Whether its hamburgers, airlines, supermodels or carnivorous plants, it’s always fun to critique and/or learn something new.  After much consideration, here are my top ten production Giuliettas.  I’ll do a non-production variation later with prototypes, re-bodies and such.  What are your top ten?

Screen Shot 2015-09-19 at 9.10.06 AM1.  Giulietta Sprint Zagato Coda Tronca.  Beautiful, elegant, purposeful and rare.  Alfa and Zagato together at the inception of what would become the TZ series.    With what 17 (or is it 35) ?? built, it’s among the lowest number production Giulietta variant.  They are expensive, but seem like they ought to be more expensive than they are.

2. Giulietta Sprint Speciale Low-Nose.  Franco Scaglione was given a task after recently finishing the BAT concept cars.  Build us a Giulietta Sprint Veloce Zagato beater.  He didn’t, but he did pen one of the all time great shapes, the purest of which, the low nose, survived through the first 95 SS’s.  The first handful were even aluminum.

Giulietta Sprint Zagato Coda Tonda.  Where the Coda Tronca is elegantly beautiful, I think the Coda Tonda is more quirky or cute. in a brute sort of way.  Rare and still potent on the track today, this would probably be number one on most peoples top ten list.

4. Giulietta Sprint Veloce Alleggerita.  If this list was about the most influential of the breed, this car would be first.  Looking at black and white photographs from the Targa Florio and seeing a whole field of these, exhaust notes probably beating slightly as they attempt to out redline each other, you can’t help but feel inspired and nostalgic.  At over 600 produced they made a relative lot of these, but many were raced to death, re-bodied and raced to death again.  Good survivors are rare, but I expect, like early rare Ferraris, these will be resurrected from scraps and donors as values continue to climb.

5. Giulietta Spider Veloce Monoposto.  I’m not sure I’ve seen one of these in the wild. It is said that 24 were made.  This picture is from an RM auction – one of the late Al Leake’s cars, not sure if it’s a real one.

6. Giulietta Sprint Veloce Confortevole.  Another variation on a variation.  These were what the Alleggerita became when they stopped production.  They made about 200 of these, the first 50 having sliding windows.  Anyone have a good picture of a nice one, or maybe a progress shot of this one?

7. Giulietta / Giulia Sprint Speciale.  The big production Giulietta on the list.  I don’t think anyone in the world can walk by it without a second look.  Pretty high survivorship for these -would be hard to send one to the crusher.

8. Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F.  Some of you would put this higher on the list -I’m a coupe guy I admit.  This is the car I get the most email about.  What can I say, this is the car that comes to mind when you say “Giulietta” to most car guys.

9. Giulietta Weekendia / Promiscua.  A curve ball I know, but several coachbuilders, Colli for sure, made variations of these.  I don’t think one has sold at auction to give us a measuring stick on value, but I expect it wouldn’t be cheap.

10. Giulia Spider Veloce 1600.  The Giulietta swan song.  Power, looks, reliability and low production.  It’s not exactly fair to compare these with the rest of the 750 and 101 Spiders since they were pulling parts from their 105 Veloce program, but however you look at it, these are spectacular cars.

  1. How can you possibly leave out the later examples of the SVZ? The Tronca is just a production SZ with an ugly lump on the back. The SVZ is a work of art that Bernini would have been proud of.

    I know you really meant to include it but had a momentary lapse of reason didn’t you?

    • I don’t consider the SVZ a production Giulietta. It will make high marks on the re-bodies and prototypes list I’m sure. If I took one-offs into consideration I might put the 750D first since I really like the two Bertone prototypes.


  2. I would include nothing by Zagato; to me these are bulbous, clumsy cars. And also not the Promiscua, not graceful or exceptional at all and hardly a production model. But certainly the Giulietta TI should be on the list: a police car, a rally car, and a great all-round family sedan, a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
