Market 230: “Juliet Spider Velosh”!

Update 9/7/10: Well, this sad case has been reduced to an ending -no reserve met- total of $1136 after 3 bids.  On the bright side, the phrase ‘Tennessee Velosh!” has entered the Alfa Giulietta lexicon.

Update 8/23/10: This feller is back on eBay -some lucky motoring enthusiast can buy it now for $2700 and figure out what to do with it later.  Woot!

Update 7/10/10: Someone liked this enough to buy it now for $2500.  In one of the Q&A responses the seller says emphatically that this car can’t be returned to stock.  With these cars likely to be $100K by the end of the decade I’m sure some intrepid soul is hoping to prove the seller wrong.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*04640 (or 750F 03305), 1315*31655 (Not included). Tennessee is the home of this Spider that’s on eBay right now.  Vin on the title with the car is 03305, vin on the build plate is 04640 and the vin on the body is unknown -if I had to bet on which is accurate I’d put my money on the title.  It’s ironic/sad/frustrating that someone took a roller 58 Spider Veloce probably worth $10 – 15K of todays money, spent 6 years ruining it by altering it to fit a V8 and Toyota suspension and now are hoping to get $2500 out of it.  This is what you call a lose-lose situation -I bet they threw out the sheet metal they cut out of it too.

What do you do with something like this?  It’s probably unusable in its current form with all that weight over the front axle, way too much power for the rear end to grip and poor visibility with that scoop.

Market 238: 58 Spider Veloce roller

Update 7/31/10: Seller ended the auction early when an acceptable bid came in.  The new owner contacted me but a selling price was not revealed.  I’m going to guess somewhere between $15k – $20k.  New owner sounds enthusiastic about the car so hopefully the restoration will be seen through.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*03326, 1315*30818. This car is on eBay right now out of Michigan.  As far as mostly disassembled roller projects go it is a pretty good starting point having matching numbers, not too much rust (I know -but I’ve seen so much worse) and no real accident damage.  Step right up!

Nose looks great as a starting place -no ugly repairs to correct, no gaping rust holes and the Veloce intake divider seen here next to the drivers side marker light is in good shape.

Market 220: 750 ‘Spyder’ Veloce

Update 5/24/10: Check out this picture of the 750F list in d’A & T.  I would think it’s a Veloce.  This car doesn’t make any sense to be $40K as a normale… more like $28k.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*05388, 1315*013679. This car is listed right now at Fantasy Junction for $39,500 and described as being a Veloce conversion but this chassis number is listed in d’Amico and Tabucchi as a 1958 Spider Veloce and I will assume they are correct.

So far so good.  Grill eyebrows are missing but that’s not a big deal to sort out if you want.  Drivers side grill tusk looks a little crooked.  Hood fits good and everything says ‘driver’.

Market 181: Early Spider Veloce

Update 1/23/10: Car has apparently sold, after 3 days on the market.  Who’s the lucky new owner?

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*01942, 1315*30541. This car is at Fantasy Junction right now and I can tell you now, it wont last.  Why do I say that?  Well, it’s a 1957, a year they didn’t make many Spider Veloce’s, it’s restored to a very high standard by people who have good reputations and it’s only $8500 more than the two 1958 Spider Veloce’s that sold last year for $50K needing some sorting and tidying.

Market 182: project Spider Veloce 06721 in Italy

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*06721, 1315*32582.  This car is listed on Anamera right now out of Torino Italy.  Numbers match, body looks good, hard to find parts are present and no price is stated.  Original color was light blue.  Car is SWB and has vent windows, a combination that stirs a lot of folks up.  I don’t see any evidence that it was reimported from USA but most of these cars ended up in the USA when new so it wouldn’t surprise me if it did too.

This is how you want to find them, dusty, together, on tires holding air and evenly aged.  Hood and door fit are excellent.  Who’s peeking out of the shop?

Market 176: Interim Spider Veloce

Update 1/12/10: Auction ended with 18 bids at $16,751.  If the commenter who outlined this cars history on Craigslist is right, then this is a pretty good result for the seller.  Not really a bad price to pay for a Spider Veloce either if that’s what you want and you’re looking for a pretty good project.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*05693. This car, an early 1959, is on eBay out of Colorado.  It looks like the seller saw the action some Spider Veloce’s were getting in late 2009 and decided it was time to send it on its way.

Looks presentable with shiny chrome/stainless, straight panels and decent paint.  I like the color. Continue reading

Market 150: Late 750F Spider Veloce

Update 12/25/09: Another close call for this car. 14 bidders did their thing and could only muster $19,200 worth of reserve not meeting enthusiasm for this car. I’m not sure what could have been done differently, I think it’s just another case of too many trips through the pixels on eBay and everyone thinks it’s got problems that they are unaware of. I’d throw $20K at it if I had it.
Another update 12/18/09: The seller has indicated in a big bold description update that he had it slightly backward and the car is 1495*07582 NOT 07852. I just looked at the pictures in the link and it is iindeed 07582.

Update 12/18/09: This car has found itself back on eBay. When it started, a reasonable seeming (compared to Market 169′s $50K result) buy it now of $20,000 was in place but it has since disappeared and the current bid is about $17,500. I suspect it will find a new home this time around.

This car still looks like a pretty good restoration candidate to me. I recognize this background foliage from Market’s 63 and 49.

Update 10/12/09: Car was bid up to $15,100 with 8 bidders, reserve not met. Pretty low for a Veloce with both a numbered replacement Veloce engine installed including the 40DCO3′s etc and the original block.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*07852, 1315*32895 + 1315*31612 from 750F 1495*04673. This car is on eBay right now out of Daytona Beach FL. Car is a project, but looks like it could be made a runner/driver with out much fuss.

Spider Veloce noseAll of the usual praise applies here too with the exception of a missing hood spear. Nose doesn’t look to have been run into the back of big American cars too frequently as is so often the case, and all the little bits than would have you combing eBay night after night are all present. Judging by details like the presence of the correct rear view mirror and wipers being where and how they ought, I would guess this car hasn’t been monkeyed with too much (no offense to any chimps in the audience).

Market 169: ’58 Spider Veloce survivor

Update 12/17/09: With 19 questions asked including: “Could you tell me the reserve?” to which the reply was “…..yes.” and lots of “How much right now?’ variations, 6 seller added description updates and 29 bids placed this car sold for $50,000 even.  If this was an SS and it was in this condition it would be $30 – $35,000, heck, if it was a lightweight Sprint Veloce it would probably only bring about $75 – 90,000. 

This represents a change for the fortunes of the early Giulietta Spider Veloce.  Just last Spring near sibling 1495*04358 in nicely restored condition sold for $1 less than this, and last months $44,000 result for 1495*05063 are proof.  Considering the numbers produced,  attrition and the percentage of survivors that are no longer original matching numbers cars, these originals can only go up in price. 

Giulietta Spider Veloce 1495*04351, 1315*31400.  This car is on eBay right now out of Michigan. d&T lists this car in mid-1958 production among a run of about a dozen sequencial Spider Veloces.  This car reeks of patina and it would be a shame to undo the years by redoing everything, but classic cars have not yet, and may never catch up to ‘regular’ antiques like 19th century furniture where refinishing a piece destroys 90% of the value.  There are obvious limits to this where vehicles are concerned, function being paramount, but a car like this deserves to be let show its age.  I guarantee that someday patina will be valued over refinish, because if for no other reason, it will be the rarest state.  Repaint a deteriorated repaint?  Tough call, would have to see in person. 

Front is pretty nice for an unrestored car.  All the trim is in good shape and the paint has a nice warm ‘I’ve been here for ages’ look.  The seller indicates it needs paint because the paint on it is a lacquer repaint that is peeling.  I like.

Market 155: 58 Spider Veloce

Update 10/27/09:  Wow - 40 bidders drove the price of this car up to $44, 421!  Very strong money for a ‘driver’ condition Spider Veloce, but a price which I think in the years to come will seem a bargain.  Not a lot of short wheel base Spider Veloce’s were made.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1496*05063, 1315*31917.  This Spider is on eBay right now out of Washington.  It’s not perfect, but it is not pretending to be and all in all it looks like a pretty great car to “take to the next level” if you are in the market for an early Spider Veloce. It’s got a little more than 3 days left to the auction and is at $25K.

!Bc54lpwBmk~$(KGrHqUOKjkEq5UJorjkBK2j83Pqhg~~_3Looks good.  I like a car that has an honest description of the condition that actually matches what is seen.  Everything I usually point out is  present and in good shape.  Borrani steels are considered correct for Veloce’s but the parts book indicates it’s an either or deal.  Popular belief (I”ve heard stories of Fergats breaking int he track) is that Borrani’s are stronger than Fergat’s so maybe the Veloce’s unofficially always had them.

Market 119: Cheap Giulietta Spider Racer

Update 10/20/09: 28 bidders resulted in a seling price of $13,500. This is very low for this car. A competitive 1300 engine alone is close to $10K to build. I wish I wasn’t paring down myself or I would have jumped in! Another Giulietta heads for Germany.

Update 10/14/09: This car is back on eBay. Previous buyer and now seller has a pretty comprehensive description and you now know exactly what you are getting. If nothing else, the auction is worth a visit to see some vintage pictures of it in action. I wonder what has been done to the engine? Cams? Big valves? Look for a solid end price this time.

Market 134: 750F Spider Veloce

Update 8/10/09: This car sold for $24,700 with 7 bidders in the hunt.  The seller noted that the engine was incorrect and bidding seems to have taken this into account.  This money seems about right for the car.  There is a Veloce block on eBay right now that would be acceptible for this car, the new owner should consider snapping it up. 

Giulietta Spider Veloce 1495*04178, 1315*44341.  This Spider Veloce is on eBay from Brighton Motorsports in Arizona.  It is listed as being numbers matching but it clearly has a Spider Normale series engine number, so either it’s not really a Veloce or the engine has been replaced.  I suspect the latter since it comes with all the Veloce components installed and the Veloce engines were known to fail if not properly maintained.  Also, Veloce’s tended to be built in pairs or groups and 04177 is a Veloce.  I’ll check d’A&T tonight and update.  I emailed the seller about this and they said they would note it on their auction but they haven’t yet.  Some discussion has been made of this car on the Yahoo group for these cars and other discrepancies have been pointed out.  d’Amico and Tabucchi say 04155 – 04229 are all Veloce’s so I think there is a good chance this car is a Veloce.

149504178 nose closeNose ridge is shapely and blends to the edge of the grill nicely.  Some guys take the stamped edge off the grill so there is a smooth transition between the body and trim.  Between the grill and drivers side over rider the paint looks bubbly or textured by being sprayed over crud.  Have a look before you buy.

Market 116: 58 Spider Veloce project shell

Update 6/16/09: The auction ended at $4000 with 11 bidders.  I think it has been established that this is a $4000 car!

Update 6/10/09: This car is back on eBay from the same seller as the subject of Market 95, and the same seller who listed it in May. It still looks like a good start for a Spider Veloce restoration. I wonder how much money is spent moving cars from small time dealer to small time dealer? I imagine when this car finally finds a home intesested in it as a project rather than a money maker, there will have been a $1500 ‘transport’ tax applied.

Update 5/14/09: 23 bids resulted in a sale price of $4010. Probably about right if the floors and sills are as rotten as stated.

Update: Well, more of a please note, the absence of a Veloce engine complete with about $4000 worth of intake components etc is is a high hurdle to overcome where this car is concerned and as Veloces get more expensive, so will these components.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 1495*05164. This car is available now on eBay out of Stanton California, one of the little town between Long Beach and Orange in Southern California. It looks decent in the pictures but the description says it’s rusty in the sills but no pictures are presented of the rust so assume the worst.
