Update 5/18/10: You, yes you can own this car for the buy it now price of $38,000. There are no new pictures so you have to take their word for it that the restoration is in fact a restoration and not a quick blow over.
Update 5/10/10: Another run on eBay is underway and as I write this it has 4 bids for a high of $28,100 reserve not met. Doesn’t add up to me as there is one crappy picture. upon which to base placing a bid.
Update 4/9/10: This car has resurfaced on eBay after the floors being replaced and the paint redone. I doubt they painted the dash or engine compartment, but hey, maybe they did. Opening bid is $25,000, reserve not met at that. What do you think?
I don’t envy the labor, just removing and replacing the windshield is an all day ordeal. I hope it ends up being worth it. I wonder if the engine compartment and dash will be red when the job is done.
Update 1/12/10: This car is back on eBay and this time they’re not messing around. Opening bid is $20,800 -buy it now is $22,000. A couple of hundred bucks worth of floor metal has been purchased from probably Wolf and is now included. They are still threatening to just go for it and sink another $20K into it if you don’t buy it soon. I don’t think I’ve seen a car that had any resale value added by doing major work to it before sale. We’ll see how it goes.
Update 12/31/09. 15 bids made $16,600 for a reserve not met finale. I wonder if the seller will make good on their threat to pay to restore it if it fails to sell. We’ll see.
Giulietta Spider 1495*08393. This car is on eBay right now out of Florida. Buy it now is $20,000 and as I write this it is $16,500 reserve not met, about a half a day to go. Florida is known for being unkind to cars that are prone to rust so an inspection is probably a good idea. Spiders of this era are (little 2 word palindrome!) not so rare that someone looking has to jump on the first one that pops up for sale, but if this car is in your neighborhood -or even within a timezone or two, it might be a good start since it looks to be complete and largely original and probably close to usable as it sits.
Looks good from this angle. Hood fits well as does the passenger door. No evidence of rot or accident damage to be seen. Missing headlight ring is said to be included along with the soft top and frame. Missing grill eyebrows are not mentioned in the Q&A.
It’s hard to call the level of rust present from a picture like this. There could be a lot just out of view near that lift pad. Would be nice if this paint could be salvaged. It looks like it would shine up nicely. Seller threatens to ‘restore it’ if it doesn’t sell in a few weeks. Okay.
There’s the headlight ring. Seats look great, the gauges don’t appear to have yellowed much. I think they added one of the later full dash pads. Steering wheel is also nice. I wouldn’t do a thing in here except get rid of the padded dash and make everything work.
Not bad. The spare lives back here, is held into place by that silver thing along the left edge of the picture. Even the rubber panels used to hide this area and dampen the road noise appear usable. This area is usually a disaster on cars that have sat.
When I get done rolling the fenders on the Acura to mount the 27′s I’ll get to work on the Alfa. I’m not saying they don’t know what they are doing, but I’d want to see at least a 70′s Alfa Spider in the background of one of the pictures. These are simple cars, but one has to be familiar with their simplicities to see them as such.
Here it is, the picture that you are expected to make the hard decisions from. There is some through rust but most seems to be surface. The new owner will probably take the car all apart to fix the rust, I’d just do a few strategic patches, POR15 it, undercoat it and have time left over to get a Shrimp Cocktail at the West Palm Beach golf club.
When you paint the body a new color (resale red over original white) it is least offensive to rattle can or brush paint under the hood around the engine in semi-gloss black. Yep, it’s a 101 1300 all factory correct besides truncated airbox. These are really good fast smooth engines. Not much torque for getting underway in a hurry but adequate in every way once your moving. I say this because lots of guys spend thousands transplanting a later bigger engine without ever having sampled the delights of the original. It’s a 1300 -my 64 VW bug was a 1300, how could it be fun…
There you have it, another Spider project, this one more complete and use-as-is-able than most. The money is about right for the car and probably proves the false economy that is a $5500 roller project like most that go through the pixels on eBay. Look for a successful auction and a satisfied if not down right pleased new owner.
